Davison was named after Judge Norman Davison, a judge of Lapeer County and a delegate to state constitution convention of 1835. The population was 5,536 at the 2000 census and fell to 5,173 by the 2010 census. Davison is located within Davison Township survey township area (7N 8E), but is administratively autonomous. The city has a total area of 1.98 square miles (5.13 km²), all land. In January 2010, it was announced that Davison City Manager Dale Martin and Davison township, Michigan Supervisor Kurt Soper had begun preliminary meetings discussing the possibility of merging the two municipalities. The 2010 census lists 2,371 households, out of which 640 (27%) had children under the age of 18 living with them, 837 (35.3%) were married couples living together, 349 (14.7%) had a female householder with no husband present, and 1,057 (44.6%) were non-families. The racial makeup of the city was 94.9% White, 1.8% African American, 0.3% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander,0.7% from other races, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.9%. In the city, the median income for a household was $37,793, and the mean household income was $48,643. About 14% of the population were below the poverty line with 5% of those under 18 being under age 18.

History

Davison Station was first settled in 1842 by Eleazer Thurston in section 10. Davison Village was incorporated as a village on May 20, 1889. By 1895, the village had a Rosemoor Park with a race track used for horse then add cars. In 1943, the track's owner in 1946 developed a subdivision on the track property. In January 2010, it was announced that Davison City Manager Dale Martin and Davison Township, Michigan Supervisor Kurt Soper had begun preliminary meetings discussing the possibility of merging the two municipalities.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.98 square miles (5.13 km²), all land. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have a population of more than 1,000 people. The population of the town was 1,071 at the 2010 census, down from 1,082 at the 2000 census. The town has a history of being the site of several civil rights protests, including in the 1930s and 1940s. It was also the location of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the city's downtown area in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was the scene of a series of protests against the war, including one that claimed the lives of four young men and one woman. It has been home to the town's mayor since the 1950s, and the mayor is a former mayor himself. The current mayor is the son of a former city mayor, who died in a car accident in the 1970s. The mayor is now the mayor's son-in-law, who also served as mayor in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.8 per cent aged birth to 19, 12.1 per cent from 20 to 29 and 12.6 per cent of the population aged 30 to 39. The median age was 39.5 years, with 13.1% who were 70 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was2.91.

The city has a council-manager government, with the position of city manager currently being held by Andrea Schroeder. The Mayor of Davison, a position currently held by Tim Bishop, is mostly titular, with most of the executive power being vested in the city manager. The municipality operates its own well water system. The Davison City Council is composed of 7 members, including the mayor. City Council Members are elected for a four-year term, with a maximum term of three years. The mayor is paid $50,000 a year. The city has no public school system, but does have a public library with a free Wi-Fi service. It also has a well-water system, which is operated by the city.
