Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel is a borough in Northumberland County, located in the Coal Heritage Region of Central Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River Valley. The population was 5,725 at the 2020 census. It is located 88 miles (141 km) northwest of Philadelphia and 71 miles (114 km) northeast of Harrisburg, in the Anthracite Coal Region. Mount Carmel Inn was opened in 1812 by Richard Yarnall and was strategically located on the Centre Turnpike (also known as the Reading-Sunbury Road or Old Reading Road) The township was erected in 1854, formed from part of Coal Township; by 1862 the borough was incorporated within the township. In earlier years, the borough had manufactories of miners' caps, cement blocks, cigars, shirts, stockings, etc., and large silk and planing mills, foundry and machine shops, a knitting mill, lumber yards, a packing plant, and wagon works. Thomas Edison placed one of his first generators plants here in 1883. In the past, there were extensive anthracite mining interests here and in the vicinity. The town was among the first towns in the country to have its streets lit by electricity. It was originally in an area claimed by Chester County; therefore the site of Mt. Carmel was originally part of a tract purchased from the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederation. Before 1770, the area was inhabited by Native Americans (possibly Lenape, Iroquoi, and/or Saponi).

History

Coal was only discovered in 1790 by Isaac Tomlinson. It took twenty-four years until the first shipment of anthracite was shipped from the borough. Thomas Edison placed one of his first generators plants here in 1883. The Edison Plant in Mount Carmel was the seventh such in the world. The township was erected in 1854, formed from part of Coal Township; by 1862 the borough was incorporated within the township. The town was among the first towns in the country to have its streets lit by electricity. Currently that area supports light manufacturing in paper and plastics. The area was once inhabited by Native Americans (possibly Lenape, Iroquois, and/or Saponi) The town is located in what was then Augusta Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. It is now part of the borough of Shamokin, which was formed in 1853 from parts of Little Mahanoy and Shamokin townships. The city is located on the Centre Turnpike (also known as the Reading-Sunbury Road or Old Reading Road) halfway between Pottsville and Danville. It was founded in 1812 by Richard Yarnall as a logging town. The first Post Office was opened in 1846. It has been home to a variety of businesses, including a brewery, a newspaper, a bank, a hotel, a school, a theater, a bowling alley, and a golf course. It also has been the site of several coal mining operations, including the Locust Mountain Coal and Iron Company.

Geography

Mount Carmel is located at 40°4747N 76°2444W (40.796447, 76.412231) in the central Appalachian Mountains. It is drained by the Shamokin Creek and is part of the Lower Susquehanna watershed. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.7 km²), all land. The borough's land is mostly urban. Mount Carmel's terrain is mostly flat and the borough is served by Pennsylvania Route 61. It has a population of 1,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The town is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs through the borough. It also has a rail link to the New York City area and the New Jersey city of Newark. The city's population is 1,100, and its land area is 1.7 sq miles (2.2 km²). The borough is located in the Allegheny National Forest, which is in the eastern part of Pennsylvania. It's in the ridge-and-valley zone of the Appalachian Mountains, and is drained to the south by theShamokin Creek. Its terrain is flat, and it is located near the town of Shamokin, Pennsylvania. The area is mostly rural, but there are some small pockets of urbanization. Its population is about 1,200. It was once known as the "Town of Carmel" due to its location in the mountains.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,390 people, 3,035 households, and 1,678 families residing in the borough. The population density was 9,655.6 people per square mile (3,738.2/km²). There were 3,629 housing units at an average density of 5,483.6 per squaremile (2,123.0/ km²) The racial makeup of the borough was 98.56% White, 0.06% African American, 0,16% Native American,0.28% Asian, 0.,02% Pacific Islander, 0, 25% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population. The median income for a household in the Borough was $22,168, and the median income. for a family was $35,217. About 14.2% of families and 18.2%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 29.1% of those under age 18 and 15.1. of those age 65 or over. The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey and New Jersey via the Raritan River and the Susquehannock River. It is the only borough in the state to have a post office, which opened in 1881. The post office is open seven days a week, seven days per week.

Politics

It was founded in 1836. Pennsylvania was the first state in the United States to vote for the statehood in 1776. The first state legislature was formed in 1838. It became a state in 1837. Pennsylvania joined the Union of Pennsylvania in 1858, and has been in the present statehood movement in 1881. It joined the Commonwealth in 1883. It won its first congressional district in 1876.

The Lower Anthracite Transportation System offers a two-route transit system weekdays and Saturdays from Mount Carmel to Coal Township and surrounding communities. A third route, operated seasonally, operates to Knoebel's Amusement Resort. Public transportation is provided by the Pennsylvania State Highway and Transportation Department. The Pennsylvania State Railroad and the Shamokin Valley Electric Railway offer trolley service in the town. The town is also home to the Pennsylvania Museum of Natural History and Science, which was established in 1903. The museum is located on the former site of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which ran from 1808 to 1911. It is now part of the U.S. National Highway System, which runs from New Jersey to South Carolina. The city is home to Pennsylvania State College, a public college that offers a liberal arts program and a business program. The University of Pennsylvania has a business school, which offers a certificate program in business and finance.
