Ambler

Ambler is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is located approximately 16 miles (26 km) north of the Center City Philadelphia. The area towards the south, including what is now Philadelphia and nearby Ambler, was the home of a linguistic group called the Unami. According to tradition, the Lenape established a peace treaty with Quaker William Penn in the 1680s. The town was the site of a disastrous train accident: The Great Train Wreck of 1856. In 1881, the Keasbey and Mattison Company, whose manufacture of asbestos, moved to Ambler as it meant that raw asbestos could be easily brought out to markets. In 1888, the borough was formally incorporated on June 16, 1888, and took the name of Ambler in honor of Mary Ambler. It was first known as Gilkey's Corner, named for an inn which was built around 1778 and managed by Andrew Gilkinson (or Gilkeson). After 1878, the area was known as "Rose Valley".:32As of 1790, Jonathan Thomas purchased half an acre of land from Gilkinson and sited a tannery at the intersection, causing a nearby creek to be nicknamed "Tannery Run". As of 1810, the tannery was sold by his son, David Thomas, to Joseph Rutter. As the steam power replaced water power in the 1870s and 1880s, the mills were unable to compete, and were abandoned.:7 In 1855, Wissahickon Station became a stop on the North Pennsylvania Railroad line.

History

Ambler is the primary city name, but also Lower Gwynedd, Maple Glen are acceptable city names or spellings, Broad Axe, Prospectville on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Ambler is a borough of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was once home to the Lenni Lenape, who established a peace treaty with William Penn in the 1680s. William and George Harmer are credited as the first landholders to actually settle in the area. In 1855, Wissahickon Station became a stop on the North Pennsylvania Railroad line. On July 17, 1856, the town was the site of a disastrous train accident: The Great Train Wreck of 1856. Mary Ambler, a local Quaker woman, walked two miles to the crash site, bringing medical supplies and directing rescue efforts. Keasbey and Company, whose business included the manufacture of asbestos, moved to Ambler's location along the railroad line in 1883. The original K&M factory was built as of 1883, with 250 residents, a store, a drug store and a few other businesses. Ambler was formally incorporated on June 16, 1888, and took the name of Ambler Borough in honor of Mary Johnson Ambler. The name Ambler is now used for the borough's post office, which was established in 1869, and the postmaster general, who was also a Quaker. The town is located in the Delaware River Valley, in an area reaching from Cape Henlopen, Delaware, northward towards the lower Hudson Valley in southern New York. The area towards the south, including what is now Philadelphia, was the home of a linguistic group called the Unami. In 1716, William andGeorge Harmer purchased a 408-acre tract from William Penn.

Geography

Ambler is located at 40°918N 75°1313W (40.155099, -75.220160). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all land. Ambler is a member of the New Jersey Council of Governments. The borough is home to the Ambler High School, a public high school, and a high school. It is also known as "Ambler High" and "The Ambler School of Arts and Crafts" The borough was founded in 1872 and is named after the town's founder, William Ambler, who died in 1875. It has a population of about 1,000 people, most of whom live in the borough's downtown area. The town is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs through Ambler. It was named after Ambler's father, William "Bill" A. A. Amler, a former mayor of the borough, who was killed in a car accident in 1874. The Borough's name is derived from the German word "ambler" which means "home" or "town" and means "place" in German. It also means "town of Ambler" or, more commonly, "towns" or" boroughs"".Ambler" is the name of a former borough in New Jersey, which was also named for a town in that state. The name is also used in the United States, as well.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the borough was 76.5% White, 12.8% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.8%. 7.9% were of Hispanic or Latino ancestry, an almost four-fold increase since the 2000 census [1]. As of the census of 2000, there were 6,426 people, 2,510 households, and 1,598 families residing in the borough. The median income for a household in the Borough was $47,014, and the median income. for a family was $51,235. The per capita income was $21,688. About 2.4% of families and 5.5%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.8. of those under age 18 and 4.9%. of those age 65 or over. The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey. It is the only borough in New Jersey that is not part of the New York City subway system. It has a population of about 6,000, the most populous borough in the U.S. and the second-largest city in the state. The population density is 7,605.8 people per square mile (2,953.7/km²). There were 2,605 housing units at an average density of 3,083.3 per squaremile (1,197.4/ km²) The racial makeup of the borough is 83.29% White, 12.03% African American, 0.25% NativeAmerican, 2.47% Asian, 0.,06% Pacific Islander, 0,40% from two or more races, and 2.40%. of Hispanic/Latino ancestry.

Politics and government

Ambler has a city manager form of government with a mayor and a nine-member borough council. The mayor is Jeanne Sorg. The borough is part of the Fourth Congressional District. The 148th State House District is represented by Rep. Mary Jo Daley. The 12th State Senate District isrepresented by Sen. Maria Collett. The city is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey. The Turnpikes are a major artery for the New York City and New Jersey economies. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, most of whom live in the boroughs of Ambler and Westfield. The Borough is in New Jersey's 4th congressional district and the 148th state house district. It is also in the 12th state senate district and is in the 4th district of New Jersey, which is home to Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-New Jersey. The borough's population is about 1,200. The City Manager form of Government is called a "city manager" form ofgovernment. The council is made up of nine members, with the mayor being the head of the council. It has a term of office of three years, with a maximum of six years. The Mayor is Sorg, who has been in office since 2008. The Council has a four-year term of service, with an additional two-year option for a fifth year. It was formed in 2010. The Town of Amblers is in a congressional district, representing the Fourth District.

Education

Ambler is served by the Wissahickon School District. There is an area Catholic grade school, Our Lady of Mercy Regional Catholic School, in Maple Glen. Temple University Ambler was founded in 1910 as the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women. It offers an array of undergraduate, graduate, and non-credit programs. The main contact address for the campus has an Ambler postal address, 580 Meetinghouse Road, Ambler, PA 19002. It is technically outside the borough limits, in Upper Dublin Township, and is in the purview of the UpperDublin Township Police. The district has six schools: four elementary, one middle (grades 6-8) and one high school (grades 9-12) In 2004, the school district had 4,535 students. The school district was formed in 2012 by the merger of St. Anthony-St. Joseph, St. Alphonsus, and St. Catherine of Siena in Horsham. It also has a middle school, and a high school, as well as an elementary school and a middle and high school. The high school has four students in grades 7-8, and one in 9-8. The elementary school has one student in grades 5-6, and the middle school has two students in 6-7, and another in 8-9. The middle school also has two high schools, one in 7th grade and the other in 8th grade. It has a main campus that is referred to as the Ambler Campus.

Arts and culture

Act II Playhouse is a 130-seat professional theatre founded in 1998. Post office murals were produced from 1934 to 1943 in the United States. The recently restored and renovated Ambler Theater is a non-profit, community owned movie theater that shows independent, art and limited-distribution films. The Ambler Symphony Orchestra currently performs several concerts per year under the musical direction of WRTI program director Jack Moore. The WRTI has been nominated for 31 Barrymore Awards and has won six.

Transportation

Butler Avenue serves as the main street through Ambler, with the road known as Butler Pike outside the borough. Pennsylvania Route 309 passes to the east of Ambler on a freeway called the Fort Washington Expressway. The Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 276) has an interchange with PA 309 south ofAmbler in Fort Washington. SEPTA Regional Rail's Lansdale/Doylestown Line provides service to Center City Philadelphia, Lansdale, and other intermediate points, at the Ambler station. Route 94 connects Ambler to the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia and the Montgomery Mall, and Route 95 connectingAmbler to Willow Grove and Gulph Mills. The borough is also served by a number of bus routes, including Route 94, Route 95, Route 94/95 and Route 94-95/95/100/100, as well as Route 95/95-100/110 and Route 98/100. The town is located on the Delaware River, which runs north to Philadelphia and south to Horsham Township and Montgomeryville. It is also on the Pennsylvania River which runs south to Montgomeryville and north to Plymouth Meeting and Plymouth Meeting, and to the Pennsylvania City area of the Philadelphia area. It has a population of about 2,000, with most of its residents living in or near the borough's central business district. It also has a large number of residents who live outside of the borough, including some who live in the Philadelphia suburbs. The city's population is about 3,000.

It has a twin city with Amberler in Germany with the village of Amparle, in the province of Rhineland-Pfalz, and in Austria with the municipality of Amperly, in Bavaria, in Germany. Amperler is sister to Maida and Amberley in Italy with the city city of Maida. Amsterle, Italy with Maida; Amperlee, Germany with MaidA, Italy; and Amparlee, Switzerland with Maidan, Italy and Maidan.
