New Holland was settled in 1728 by brothers John Michael and John Phillip Ranc (Ranck) Before it became known as New Holland, it had been called "Hog Swamp", "Earltown" and "New Design" As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,762, up from 5,378 in the 2010 census. The borough lies on a low ridge, with the north side draining via Groff Creek and other small streams to the Conestoga River and the south side draining to Mill Creek, which flows southwest to the Susquehanna River. New Holland has been the twin city of Longvic, France since 1967 because there was a Case New Holland plant in the French commune. Since its inception in 1927, the New Holland Farmers Fair has been held in 1927. The fair was not held from 1941 to 1945 due to World War II, and was not to be held in 2020 due to the COVID-1919 pandemic pandemic. The area is served by the Eastern Lancaster Library (ELANCO Library) and the Library System of Lancaster County. The New Holland Secondary rail line, which splits off the Amtrak Keystone Line just east of Lancaster, serves a number of businesses, notably RR Donnelley and Sons Printing in Lancaster, as well as one of the Dart Container factories, and L&S Sweeteners, both in Leola. The Eastern Lancaster County School District has its district headquarters in New Holland. This site houses Garden Spot High School and Garden Spot Middle School. Elementary schools within the district include New Holland, Blue Ballnock and Brecknock.

History

New Holland was settled in 1728 by brothers John Michael and John Phillip Ranc (Ranck) New Holland has been the twin city of Longvic, France since 1967 because there was a Case New Holland plant in the French commune. New Holland Agriculture is listed alongside John Casper Stoever Log House on the National Register of Historic Places. The New Holland Machine Company was founded here in 1895 by Abe Zimmerman. The city was once called "Hog Swamp", "Earltown" and "New Design" before it became known as New Holland. It is located on the Ohio River, which was once known as the Ohio Turnpike. It has a population of about 2,000, and is located in the Ohio Valley region of the U.S. state of Ohio. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, and runs through the town of New Holland, which is in the eastern part of the state. The town is home to the Ohio State University, which has a campus in New Holland and the Ohio University of Science and Technology, which opened in 1875. The University of Ohio has a chapter of the American College of Agricultural Sciences, which began in 1876. It was the first college in the state to admit women, and the first to admit men in 1881. The university also opened a women's college in 1883. The state's first high school opened in 1888, and it is the only one of its kind in the United States.

Geography

New Holland is located in eastern Lancaster County at 40°68N 76°516W (40.102095, -76.087646) According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km²) Pennsylvania Route 23 passes through the borough as Main Street. The borough lies on a low ridge, with the north side draining via Groff Creek and other small streams to the Conestoga River. The south side draining to Mill Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Constoga, which flows southwest to the Susquehanna River. New Holland is a part of the Philadelphia-Lancaster Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers the eastern half of Lancaster County. The U.S. Census Bureau recorded New Holland as having a population of 1,816 in the 2010 Census. The population of New Holland was 1,788 at the time of the 2010 census, up from 1,638 in the 2000 Census. It is located at 40.68N, 76.516W, and has a land area of  1.9sq miles (4.9km²), all of it recorded as land. It lies on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs east to west from New Holland to Morgantown, and west to Lancaster, the county seat. The town of Lancaster is located 14 miles (23 km) to the east, and 11 miles (18 km) west of the borough.

Rail

New Holland is a terminus of the New Holland Secondary rail line, which splits off the Amtrak Keystone Line just east of Lancaster. The line is owned by Norfolk Southern Railway and serves a number of businesses along the way, notably RR Donnelley and Sons Printing in Lancaster, as well as one of the Dart Container factories, and L&S Sweeteners, both in Leola. New Holland is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. The turnpike was built in 1881 and was the first railway line in the United States. It was completed in 1883 and is now part of the Norfolk Southern mainline. It is the only line of its kind in the U.S. and runs through the town of New Holland, Pennsylvania. It also serves the towns of Lancaster and Leola, and the city of Leola in western Pennsylvania. The train station is located at the end of the line and is known as New Holland Station, but it is also known as the "New Holland Station" or "The New Holland Train Station" because of its location in the town's historic center. The station was opened in 1879 and is the first station on the New York to New Holland line. It opened alongside the Keystone Line, which ran from New Jersey to New York City. The New Holland station is the last stop on the Keystone line before it was re-routed to Pennsylvania and renamed New Holland. The Amtrak Keystone line runs from New Holland to Philadelphia and New York.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,092 people, 2,084 households, and 1,448 families residing in the borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 90.34% White, 1.02% African American, 0.08% Native American, 025% Asian, 2.57% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.42% of the population. The age demographics in the Borough are diverse, with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 16. 1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. ForEvery 100 females age 18 and over there were 94.1 males. The average household income was $44,446, and the median income for a family was $50,758. The per capita income for the Borough was $20,187. About 3.4%. of families and 5.2% of people were below the poverty line, including 7.5% of those under 18 and 1.5%. of those age 65 or over. The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey. It is the only borough in New Jersey that does not have a post office.

Public services

The Eastern Lancaster County School District has its district headquarters in New Holland. Garden Spot High School and Garden Spot Middle School are located there. Elementary schools within the district include New Holland, Blue Ball and Brecknock. The area is served by the Eastern Lancaster Co. Library (ELANCO Library), formerly known as New Holland Library. The ELANCO library is a member of the Library System of Lancaster County. It is located on Chestnut Street in the New Holland section of the district. The library is part of the Lancaster County Public Library System, which is based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1903 and is located in the town of Lancaster. It has a collection of more than 10,000 books. It also has a branch of the Pennsylvania State Library, which was established in 1903. The public library system was established by the State of Pennsylvania in 1903, and later became the Lancaster Library System. The Library System was established to provide public access to a wide range of public services, including public library services and the state's public school system. The district also has its own library system, the Lancaster Public Library, based in the city of Lancaster and serving the area of New Holland and Blue Ball. Culture

The New Holland Farmers Fair is an annual festival held in New Holland, Holland. Since its inception in 1927, the fair has been held 88 times. The fair was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is held on the same day as the New Holland Festival, which is held every year on the last Sunday in September. The festival is free and open to the public. It was first held in 1927 and has since grown to be one of the largest fairs in the world.
