Hobbs was founded in 1907 when James Isaac Hobbs established a homestead and named the settlement. The small, isolated settlement expanded rapidly following the discovery of oil by the Midwest Oil Company in 1927. At the peak of this oil boom, over 12,000 people lived in Hobbs. Hobbs is in eastern Lea County, less than 4 mi (6 km) west of the Texas border. U.S. Routes 62/180 pass through the city, leading east 29 mi (47km) to Seminole, Texas, and west 69 mi (111 km) to Carlsbad. The city experiences hot summers and chilly winters. With around 70% of precipitation coming in the high solar half of the year, Hobbs may also be defined as a dry-winter humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cwa) The city is home to the University of the Southwest, which opened in 1956. It is also home to New Mexico Junior College, a junior college, and Hobbs Army Airfield, which is still used for soaring competitions. Its population was 40,508 at the 2020 census, increasing from 34,122 in 2010. It has a total area of 26.4 square miles (68.5 km²), of which 0.04 sq mi (0.1 km²) is covered by water. The population of Hobbs was 33,405 at the 2010 census. The racial makeup of the city was 63.5% White, 6.8% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 24.5%, and 3.7% from other races.

History

Hobbs is the primary city name, but also Oil Center are acceptable city names or spellings. Hobbs was founded in 1907 when James Isaac Hobbs (1852-1923) established a homestead and named the settlement. The small, isolated settlement expanded rapidly following the discovery of oil by the Midwest Oil Company in 1927. At the peak of this oil boom, over 12,000 people lived in Hobbs. In 1938, seven local men were killed and five more injured when an explosive charge used in oil drilling detonated prematurely. following the outbreak of World War II, Hobbs Army Airfield was built north of town in 1942. In 1948, the city bought the air base and converted it into the Hobbs Industrial Air Park, which is still used for soaring competitions. In 1962, it became the College of the Southwest, and in 2008, it was changed again to the University of the Southwestern. A second college, New Mexico Junior College, opened in 1966. It was initially the First Baptist College, and then the First Junior College. In 1956, it opened as the New Mexico College of Technology, and later as New Mexico State College. It is the only college in the state to be named after a U.S. state or state university. It opened its doors to the public in 1956, and it is the oldest college in New Mexico. The U.N. College of Southwestern Studies opened in 1968, and its name was later changed to the U.M. Southwestern College. The name was changed to University of Southwest in 2008. The University of Southwest is a public, non-profit institution.

Geography

Hobbs is in eastern Lea County, less than 4 mi (6 km) west of the Texas border. U.S. Routes 62/180 pass through the city. Land in the city drains either east to Seminole Draw or southeast to Monument Draw, both of which are tributaries of Mustang Draw in Texas and ultimately part of the Colorado River watershed. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Hobbs has a total area of 26.4 square miles (68.5 km²), of which 0.04 square miles of it is covered by water. The city is located in the eastern part of Lea county, just east of the town of Lovington, which is the county seat. The town of Kermit, Texas, is just to the south of the city, on the Texas-Mexico border. It has a population of 1,000, with the majority of its residents living in and around Hobbs. It is the only city in Lea counties that is not in the state of Texas, and the only one in the county that does not have a post office. The nearest airport is in Carlsbad, 69 mi (111 km) to the west, and Hobbs is the nearest town to the state capital of San Antonio, where it is located on the other side of the border with Texas. The closest airport is San Antonio International Airport, which has an airport with an international airport on the same name, at a cost of $1.2 million.

It is located on the New Mexico-New Mexico border and is on the U.S. Interior Insular Watkins Climatology University of New Mexico and the University of New Mexico Extension of the United States System of Maximum Temperatures (U.N. C M Thermal Moderate and Extreme Temperatures (U N T Moderation) system. It has a hot summer and cold winters. It experiences a hot spring and cold summer and cool winters. The town has hot summers, cold winters, and a warm spring and cool summers. For every 100 females, there are 100.2 males. The per capita income for the city is $14,209. It is the only city in the state with a city population of more than 30,000 people. In the city, the age distribution was 30.4 per cent under 18, 10.3 percent from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 19.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.9 per cent who were 65 or older.

Economy

The largest industries in Hobbs are mining/quarrying and oil and gas extraction, followed by retail trade and educational services.
