Port Republic is a city on the Mullica River, located in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 1,115, reflecting an increase of 78 (+7.5%) from the 1,037 counted in the 2000 Census. During the American Revolutionary War, Port Republic provided refuge to the residents of the nearby community of Chestnut Neck when the British Army, arriving by ship, sacked their town on October 6, 1778. The city's name derives from the "U.S. Republic" The city is one of 56 South Jersey municipalities that are included within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a protected natural area of unique ecology covering 1,100,000 acres (450,000 ha) that has been classified as a United States Biosphere Reserve. Part of the city is included in the state-designated Pineland Area, which includes portions of Atlantic County and areas in Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Ocean counties. In 1842, an effort was made to rename the area from Wrangleborough to Unionville, with a post office to be established under that name. As another Unionville existed in theState, the name "Port Republic" was chosen. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the township include Chestnutneck and Unionville. The town is a dry town, where alcohol is not permitted to be sold by law.

History

In 1774, Evi Smith, Hugh McCullum, and Richard Wescoat applied for a Royal charter to build a dam, sawmill, and gristmill on their land along Nacote Creek. During the American Revolutionary War, Port Republic provided refuge to the residents of the nearby community of Chestnut Neck when the British Army, arriving by ship, sacked their town on October 6, 1778. In 1842, an effort was made to rename the area from Wrangleborough to Unionville, with a post office to be established under that name. As another Unionville existed in the state, the name "Port Republic" was chosen. Port Republic was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 1, 1905, from portions of Galloway Township. The city's name derives from the "U.S. Republic". It is located in New Jersey's Hunterdon County, which is home to the state's oldest incorporated municipality, Monmouth County, and parts of Monmouth and Ocean counties. It is one of the oldest cities in the U.S., having been founded in 1774. It has been claimed that Chestnutneck was settled as early as 1637, but no evidence to support this claim has been presented. It had been used as a base by privateers who were capturing goods intended for British forces. Some of the British ships were trapped in the creek by the ebb tides. The General Lafayette Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a monument on October6, 1911, to mark the site of the Battle ofChestnut Neck.

Geography

The city is one of 56 South Jersey municipalities that are included within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. Part of the city is included in the state-designated Pinelanded Area, which includes portions of Atlantic County, along with areas in Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Ocean counties. The city is part of the South Jersey Bay Area, a protected natural area of unique ecology covering 1,100,000 acres (450,000 ha), that has been classified as a United States Biosphere Reserve and established by Congress in 1978. According to the United States Census Bureau, Port Republic city had a total area of 8.55 square miles (22.14 km²), including 7.46square miles (19.33 km²) of land and 1.09sq miles (2.81sq km) of water (12.70%). Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the township include Chestnut Neck and Unionville. The town of Port Republic is located in the northern part of New Jersey's Atlantic County. The state of the state is also home to the Atlantic Coast Ranges, which stretch from Atlantic County to Cape May County, including parts of Atlantic, Burlington and Gloucester counties, and parts of Gloucester, Camden and Monmouth counties. It is located on the Delaware River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Passaic River. It also borders the towns of Galloway and Washington in Atlantic County and Bass River in Burlington County.

Demographics

As of the 2000 United States Census there were 1,037 people, 365 households, and 289 families residing in the city. The median household income was $77,063 (with a margin of error of +/ $5,800) The per capita income for the borough was $36,408 (+/ $4,232). About 2.4% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over. The 2010 United States census counted 1,115 people, 415 households and 320 families in the City. The racial makeup was 95.78% (1,068) White, 0.63% (7) Black or African American,0.45% (5) Native American, 0.90% (10) Asian, 0,00% (0) Pacific Islander, and 1.52% (17) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.96% (33) of the city's population. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.03. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 89.7 males. The city's median income for a household in 2010 was $70,833, while the per capita incomes for the city was $24,369. The U.S. Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household incomes was $89,375 (+/$15,052).

Government

Port Republic operates under the City form of New Jersey municipal government. The mayor, as executive, is responsible for administrative functions and appointment of all officials. The City Council is comprised of seven members, with one member elected at-large to a four-year term in office and six who are elected from wards to three-year terms on a staggered basis with two seats up for election each year. As of 2022, the Mayor of the City of Port Republic is Republican Monica "Niki" Giberson, whose term of office ends December 31, 2025.Atlantic County is governed by a directly elected county executive and a nine-member Board of County Commissioners, responsible for legislation. New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term end 2025). For the 117th United States Congress, New Jersey's Second Congressional District is represented by Jeff Van Drew (R, Dennis Township). New Jersey has 15 municipalities (of the 564) statewide that operate under this form of government, which is used in 15 of the state's 15 municipalities. For the 2022-2023 session, the 9th Legislative District of the New Jersey Legislature isrepresented in the State Senate by Christopher J. Connors (R) and in the General Assembly by DiAnne Gove (R), Long Beach Township and Brian E. Rumpf (R, Little Egg Harbor Township) The City is located in the 2nd Congressional District and is part of New York's 9th state legislative district.

Education

The Port Republic School District is comprised of one school, Port Republic Elementary School. As of the 2018-2019 school year, the district had an enrollment of 104 students and 15.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 6.7:1. Cedar Creek High School is one of three high schools operated as part of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District. Students in portions of Galloway and Hamilton townships have the opportunity to attend Cedar Creek through the school of choice program or through attendance in magnet programs. City public school students are also eligible to attend the Atlantic County Institute of Technology in the Mays Landing section of Hamilton Township or the Charter-Tech High School for the Performing Arts, located in Somers Point. The school district was the 12th-smallest enrollment of any school district in the state, with 118 students in the 2016-17 school year. The district is located in the northern section of Egg Harbor City and opened to students in September 2010. The high school is zoned to serve students from egg Harbor City, Mullica Township, PortRepublic, and Washington Township. The town of Somers Point has a high school that opened in September 2013. The city is also home to the New Jersey Center for the Arts, a performing arts center that offers classes in music, theater, and dance. The community has a long history of supporting the arts, and the town has a history of sending/receiving students to the school.

Transportation

As of May 2010, the city had a total of 23.29 miles (37.48 km) of roadways. The Garden State Parkway passes through the city and is accessible at Interchange 48. U.S. Route 9 and County Route 575 pass through Port Republic. A small piece of Route 167 is in the city. The bridge across Nacote Creek in Port Republic is the oldest bridge in Atlantic County, built in 1904, and is on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. It is also in need of repair, and its reconstruction is planned as part of the county's plan to repair several older bridges throughout the county. In early 2021 the county commissioners awarded a contract for its replacement to South State Inc., which planned to begin work on it around July 1 of that year.NJ Transit provides bus services on the 559 route between Lakewood Township and Atlantic City. The city is home to the Port Republic High School, which was founded in the early 20th century. It was the first high school in the state to open in 1876. The school is located in the town of Port Republic, which is located on the shore of the N.J. Turnpike. The town also has a high school, which opened in the late 20th Century. The high school has a junior high, high school and adult high school. It also has an adult high and high school that opened in 1878. It has a senior high, a middle school, and an elementary school.

Historic sites

Locations in Port Republic listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the Amanda Blake Store. The Port Republic Historic District is roughly bounded by Mill Street, Clark's Landing Road, Adams Avenue, Port Republic-Smithville Road and Riverside Drive. Port Republic is home to the Port Republic Museum, which was built in the early 1900s. It is located at 104 Main Street, and was added to the Register on January 25, 1979, as building #7900-1469. It was added again on May 16, 1991, as district #9100-0596. The museum is located on the corner of Mill Street and Adams Avenue. It dates back to the mid-19th century, when it was built as a store for Amanda Blake. The store was later converted into a museum in the 1960s and 1970s, and is now located on Mill Street. It has been listed on The National Register since 1979, and the district since 1991. It also includes the PortRepublic Historic District, which is bounded by Adams Avenue and Mill Street to the east and west of the city's central business district, and to the north and south of the town's main street to the west and back again to the city center. The district is also known as the "Port Republic Historic Historic District," which was added in 1991 as district number 9100-0596, and also includes a number of other historic buildings. The town's population is about 2,000. The city has a population of about 1,500 people.
