Ossipee is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,372 at the 2020 census. The town was named for the Ossipee Indians, one of the twelve Algonquian tribes. It was once the site of an Indian stockade fort, designed to protect the tribe from the Mohawks in the west. In 1917, Virgil D. White set up to create a patent for his conversion kit that changed the Ford Model T into a "snowmobile" He also copyrighted the term "s snowmobile" at the time, costing about $395. The highest point in the town is 2,080 feet (630 m) above sea level on an unnamed ridge in the Ossipese Mountains in the western part of town. The two primary settlements in town are Center Ossipees, located near the southern junction of routes 16 and 25, and OssipeE Corner, located 5 miles (8 km) south of Center Ossipes. Other villages include West Ossipes, near the border with Tamworth; Moultonville; and Water Village, along Route 171 near theborder with Tuftboro. The area of the town has a total area of 75.3 square miles (195.0 km²), of which 70.5 square miles. (182.5 km²) are land and 4.8 square miles of water, comprising 6.38% of theTown. Ossipei is drained by the Ossiping River and its tributaries.
History
Ossipee was named for the Ossipee Indians, one of the twelve Algonquian tribes. It was once the site of an Indian stockade fort, designed to protect the tribe from the Mohawks in the west. The town is a major source of sand and gravel, transported by railroad to Boston. In 1917, Virgil D. White set up to create a patent for his conversion kit that changed the Ford Model T into a "snowmobile" He also copyrighted the term "s snowmobile" in 1918. In 1922, the conversion kit was on the markets and available only through Ford dealerships. In 1859, when the population was 2,123, the town contained twelve sawmills, five gristmills and twelve clapboard and shingle mills. The Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad in 1871 reached Ossipees Corner. The trains brought commerce and tourists, helping the town develop as a summer resort. Railroad service, however, would be discontinued in 1961 for passengers, and in 1972 for freight. In 1972, the railroad service was discontinued for passengers and freight, and the town was incorporated as a town on February 22, 1785. The first snowmobile was made in 1918 by Virgil White, who applied his patent in 1918 and created his own snowmobile. The snowmobile cost about $395, and at the time, the kit was expensive, costing about $400. In 1921, it was available for sale for $1,000.

Adjacent municipalities include Madison, Freedom, Wakefield, Wolfeboro, and Wakefield-Wakefield, as well as Tamworth, Freedom and Woonsocket. The town has a population of 2,816. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the town's population to be 2,917. It is located in the southern part of New Hampshire, at the junction of state roads 16,25, 28, and 171, near the town of Tamworth. It has a water supply of 4.8 square miles of water, comprising 6.38% of its total area. The area is drained by the Ossipinge River and its tributaries, which is the source of the lake in the northeastern part of town. It also receives tributary the Pine, Beech, Bearcamp and Lovell rivers.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,345 people, 1,826 households, and 1,165 families residing in the town. There were 3,057 housing units, of which 1,231, or 40.3%, were vacant.
