Glen Burnie is an unincorporated town and census-designated place (CDP) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It is a suburb of Baltimore. The population of Glen Burnie was 67,639 at the 2010 census. In 1812, Elias Glenn, a district attorney, established a county seat near what is currently known as Brooklyn Park. The name was changed to "Glennsbourne Farm", and eventually "Glenburnie", as the property was passed through Glenn's descendants. Harundale Mall, the first enclosed shopping center east of the Mississippi River, in 1958. Marley Station, a large shopping center, opened in February 1987. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration office building employs many people in the town. In the 1970s, another building was built to make the town more urban. In 1965, North Andel Hospital opened as a community hospital, but as it was constantly overflowed with patients, it was renovated to accommodate more patients and equipment. In 2000, the University of Maryland Medical System bought the hospital in 2000 and renovated it to accommodate even more patients, and it is still in use today. The oldest area church is St. Alban's Episcopal, which was built in 1904, with many of its bricks dating back to Marley Chapel, an early Maryland parish from the 1730s.Until 1950 the Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad provided passenger and freight service from Annapolis to Baltimore; passenger service ended in February 1950 due to increased competition from buses and private automobiles.
History

In 1854, William Wilkins Glenn incorporated the Curtis Creek Mining, Furnace and Manufacturing Company into his family's property. Glenburnie became an official state subdivision in 1888. Harundale Mall, the first enclosed shopping center east of the Mississippi River, opened in 1958. Crain Highway, one of Glen Burnie's main thoroughfares (named after Robert Crain), opened in 1927 and Ritchie Highway (Maryland Route 2, named for ex-Governor Albert C. Ritchie) followed in 1939. In 1965 North Hospital opened as a community hospital, but as it was overflowed with patients, the University of Maryland Medical System bought the hospital in 2000 and renovated it to accommodate more patients. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration office building employs many people in town. The intersection of Central Avenue and Crain Highway forms the boundaries of the NW, SW, NE & SE postal quadrants in the community's center. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Glen Burnie has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The CDP has a total area of 18.0 square miles (46.7 km²), of which 17.3 sq miles (44.9 km²) is land and 0.69sq miles (1.8km²) (3.95% of the CDP is water) It has a population of 2,788. It has an average household income of $42,816 (2.7% of its population) and a population growth rate of 0.8% over the past decade. The city has a high school graduation rate of 1.9%. It has one of the highest crime rates in the city, with the highest rate of arrests per capita in the Baltimore area. The community has a low unemployment rate, at 0.7%. It is home to the Baltimore Ravens football team, the Ravens Baltimore Ravens basketball team, and the Ravens Ravens women's basketball team.
Education

The race was held on September 28, 2014, and 2015, when it was held at the Baltimore County Fairgrounds, which are located in the downtown area of the city. The event was also held in 2012 and 2013 at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, where it was named the "Maryland State Fair" and the 2013 Maryland State Science and Technology Museum. The 2014 Maryland State Screaming Contest took place on September 27, 2014.

Cromwell Station is the southern terminus of the Cromwell Branch of the Baltimore Light Rail. BWI Rail Station located in nearby Linthicum provides regional rail service to Glen Burnie via the MARC Penn Line and Amtrak. The Baltimore Beltway provides circumferential travel throughout Greater Baltimore. The airport is directly adjacent to the west of the city, providing the city access to domestic and international flights. The city is home to two light rail stops (Ferndale and Cromwell / Glen burnie) and a park-and-ride for commuters. The town is located in the Baltimore Metropolitan Statistical Area (BMA), which includes Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis. The BMA also includes Frederick, Prince George's, Harford, and Wicomico counties, which are part of the Maryland-Maryland-Pennsylvania tri-state area.
