Marshalltown is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Iowa, located along the Iowa River. It is the 16th largest city in Iowa, with a population of 27,591 at the 2020 census. Henry Anson was the first European settler in what is now called Marshalltown. He named the town Marshall, after Marshall, Michigan, a former residence of his. Adrian Constantine "Cap" Anson, son of Henry and Jennette Anson is today known as Marshalltown's first son. Adrian became a Major League Baseball player and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Marshalltown plays a small but significant role in the life of Ebe Dolliver, a main character in MacKinlay Kantor's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Andersonville" (1955) In 1961, the south side of town was hit by an F3 tornado, causing $1 million (1961 USD) in the town alone. On July 19, 2018, a EF3 tornado with peak winds of 144 mph moved directly through downtown at 4:37 p.m. local time. It destroyed the spire from the top of the courthouse, while heavily damaging or destroying several homes, businesses, and historic downtown buildings. Although there were no fatalities, 23 people were injured. The tornado was on the ground for 23 minutes along a 8.41-mile-long (13.13 km) path of destruction up to 1,200 yards (1,100 m) wide.
History
Henry Anson was the first European settler in what is now called Marshalltown. In 1853 Anson named the town Marshall, after Marshall, Michigan, a former residence of his. The town became Marshalltown in 1862 because another Marshall already existed in Henry County, Iowa. By 1900, Marshalltown had 10,000 residents. Many industries began developing in Marshalltown, like Fisher Controls, Lennox International and Marshalltown Company. Marshalltown plays a small but significant role in the life of Ebe Dolliver, a main character in MacKinlay Kantor's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Andersonville" (1955) On April 23, 1961, the south side of town was hit by an F3 tornado, causing $1 million (1961 USD) in the town alone. On July 19, 2018, a EF3 tornado with peak winds of 144 mph moved directly through downtown at 4:37 p.m. local time. It destroyed the spire from the top of the courthouse, while heavily damaging or destroying several homes, businesses, and historic downtown buildings. The tornado killed one person and injured 12. On August 10, 2020, Marshall Town was hit. by a powerful derecho, which caused extensive damage throughout the city. Over a hundred cars parked near a factory had their windows ripped out by 99 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour) winds. The city was "extensive", particularly to trees, particularly in the first week after the storm; 99 percent restoration was achieved on August 23.
Geography

Neighboring counties include Hardin and Grundy to the north, Tama to the east, Jasper to the south, and Story to the west. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Marshalltown has a hot-summer humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfa" on climate maps. The city is located on the Missouri River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to be located on a river, which is used as a source of water for the city's water supply. Marshalltown is located near the junction of the Missouri and Missouri Turnpike. It has a population of 2,816. The town is home to the University of Marshall, which was founded in 1876. The university is located in Marshalltown and has a history of being one of the oldest cities in the United States. It was the first city in Marshall County to become a state capital in 1872. There were 10,857 housing units at an average density of 602.2 per squaremile (232.5/km 2). The racial makeup ofthe city was 86.8%, with 1.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.6%. Asian, 8.6%, Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.6.
Economy
The Big Treehouse is a large tourist attraction located outside of Marshalltown. The city is home to a large number of businesses, many of which are based in the city. The town's economy is dominated by the construction industry, which is one of the city's main sources of income. The first schoolhouse in Marshalltown was a log cabin built in 1853. There are six elementary schools, one intermediate school, a Catholic school (PreK6) and Christian school (18), and a middle school (78) There is also Marshalltown High School, with over 1,000 students. The BCLUW Community School District serves some rural areas nearby Marshalltown. The district was established on July 1, 1992 by the merger of the LDF and SEMCO school districts. It serves small portions of the Marshalltown city limits. The school district is part of the Kansas City Public Schools system. It was established in the 1970s. It is one of the largest school districts in the state, with more than 1,200 students. It has been in operation since 1971. It also has a middle and high school, as well as a pre-school and an intermediate school. The high school was founded in 1874. The first teacher was Neary Hoxie, who served as the school's first teacher. In 1874, high school classes were held in an old building on North Center Street. C. P. Rogers was the superintendent of the high school. As of 2020, there are multiple schools in Marshall Town. They include Marshalltown Elementary, Marshalltown Intermediate, and Marshalltown Middle School. They are all in the city limits of Marshalltown, Kansas. They were established in 1971. The elementary school was the first to open. The middle school was opened in 1978.
