Kamiah is a city in Lewis and Idaho counties in the U.S. state of Idaho. The population was 1,295 at the 2010 census, up from 1,160 in 2000. The city is located at the confluence of Lawyer Creek and the Clearwater River on the left bank of the latter. It is within the Nez Perce Indian Reservation, which was opened to white settlement 127 years ago in November 1895. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Kamiah has a hot-summer continental climate (Köppens Dfa) The city has a total area of 1.17 square miles (3.03 km²), of which 1.08 squaremile (2.80 km²) is land and 0.23 km² (1.08 sq miles) is water. The name Kamiah is derived from Nez perce for "many rope litters" as the area was used to fish steelhead. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in the Kamiah area for several weeks during the spring of 1806, waiting for snows to melt. Kamiah was also the birthplace of the Appaloosa horse, which is said to have been first bred in the area in the early 19th century. The town is the setting for Across the Wide Missouri, a 1951'mountain men' film set in the 1830s and featuring the character of Sacagawea of the Lewis & Clark expedition, who led her associated mountain men's troop to her homeland.

History

Kamiah is the character name of the Nez Perce/Blackfoot woman in Across the Wide Missouri, a 1951'mountain men' film set in the 1830s. According to Nez perce tradition, the Appaloosa horse was first bred in the area. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped in the Kamiah area for several weeks during the spring of 1806, waiting for snows to melt. Kamiah is within the NeZ Perce Indian Reservation. Similar to the opening of lands in Oklahoma, the U.S. government opened the reservation for white settlement 127 years ago in November 1895. The proclamation had been signed less than two weeks earlier by President Cleveland. The name Kamiah means "many rope litters," as Nezperce manufactured "Kamia" ropes to fish steelhead in the region. The area is also known as the birthplace of Hohots Ilppilp, who was the leader for all NezPerce until the 1840s. When the first leader was appointed, it was his grandson Ellis who lived in this area and maintained large herds of sheep, cattle and over a thousand horses. It is also home to the Bitterroot Range, where Sacagawea led her associated mountain men's troop to her homeland (Three Forks, Montana for SacagAWea). Kamiah was the site of the first white settlement in the United States, in 1806. It was also the place where the first black settlement was held.

Geography

Kamiah is located at the confluence of Lawyer Creek and the Clearwater River. U.S. Route 12 passes through the city. Kamiah has a hot-summer continental climate (Köppen Dfa) The city is at 1,250 feet above sea level, but elevations of over 2,800 feet on the prairie lie within three miles of Kamiah. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.17 square miles (3.03 km²), of which 1.08 sq miles (2.80 km²) is land and 0.09sq miles (0.23 km²") is water. In the Kamiah area, the Lewis-Idaho County line follows Lawyer. Creek to its confluence with the Clearwaters River, and then turns to follow the. Clearwater. The two streams cut deep and narrow valleys through the otherwise relatively flat, rolling Camas Prairie region that surrounds Kamiah, Idaho. The city's highest elevation is 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea-level, but its lowest point is around 1,200 feet (200 m) below sea level. It is located on Idaho State Highway 64 andIdaho State Highway 162, both of which cross through Kamiah on their way to and from the Idaho/Idaho border. The town has a population of 2,000 (2,000 people) according to the U.N. Census Bureau.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,295 people, 596 households, and 325 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 82.2% White, 0.4% African American, 8.9% Native American, 0.,7% Asian, 0,3% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. The city's median income was $21,793, and the median income for a family was $33,424. In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.0% under the age of 18, 6.0%, 20.8% from 18 to 24, and 26.1% from 25 to 44. Economy

The city's largest employer was the Three Rivers Timber sawmill, which employed 108 before its closure in late 2008. After nearly two years, the mill was sold and restarted in August 2010 as Blue North Forest Products. The mill was closed in 2008, but reopened in 2010 after a two-year lay-off. The sawmill was closed again in 2009, but restarted again in 2010. The city is home to one of Canada's largest sawmills, which employs more than 100 people. It is located on the banks of the Red River, which runs through the city. The Red River is a tributary of the Northumberland River. The river flows through the heart of the city, which was once the site of the town of Three Rivers. The Three Rivers sawmill is located in the city's downtown area, near the city centre. The town is also home to the Canadian Museum of Nature, which is based in the town's historic downtown area. It was founded in 1872 and is one of the country's oldest museums, dating back to the early 19th century. The Canadian National Museum of Natural History is also located in Three Rivers, and was opened in 1876. The museum was the birthplace of the Canadian settlement of Red River. It has been named after a local family of lumbermen, who settled in the area in the early 1800s. The three Rivers Timber mill is located near the center of the community. It employed 108 people at its peak in 2008.
