Alpharetta

Alpharetta is a city in northern Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2020 US Census, Alpharetta's population was 65,818. The population in 2010 was 57,551. In the 1830s, the Cherokee people in Georgia and elsewhere in the South were forcibly relocated to the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) under the Indian Removal Act. Pioneers and farmers later settled on the newly vacated land, situated along a former Cherokee trail stretching from the North Georgia mountains to the Chattahoochee River. The city's name may be a variation of a fictional Indian girl, Alfarata, in the 19th-century song "The Blue Juniata"; it may also be derived from alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet. The Simeon and Jane Rucker Log House, built in 1833, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. In 2010, the racial composition of the city was as follows:White: 72.0% Asian: 13.7% Black or African American: 11.2% Hispanic or Latino : 8.7%. Native American: 0.2%. Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander:0.1%. The city has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) and is part of USDA hardiness zone 7b. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 27.3 square miles (70.7 km²).

History

Alpharetta is the primary city name, but also Johns Creek are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Alpharetta, Georgia. Alpharetta was chartered on December 11, 1858. It is situated along a former Cherokee trail stretching from the North Georgia mountains to the Chattahoochee River. The city's name may be a variation of a fictional Indian girl, Alfarata, in the 19th-century song "The Blue Juniata" It may also be derived from alpha, the first letter of the Greek alphabet. The Simeon and Jane Rucker Log House, built in 1833, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It served as the county seat of Milton County until 1931, when Milton County merged with Fulton County to avoid bankruptcy during the Great Depression. It was also known as Milton until July 1858, when it became the city of Alpharetta. It has a population of about 2,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in Georgia. It also has the second-largest population of any city in the state, after Atlanta, Georgia, with 1,856 people. It's located on the banks of the Chattooga River, which runs through the center of the city. The town's name is derived from the Cherokee word for "home" or "place," which means "place" in Cherokee language. In the 1830s, the Cherokee people in Georgia and elsewhere in the South were forcibly relocated to the Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) under the Indian Removal Act. The area's first permanent landmarks was the New Prospect Camp Ground (also known as the Methodist Camp Ground), beside a natural spring.

Geography

Alpharetta is in northern Fulton County and is bordered to the southeast by Johns Creek, to the south and west by Roswell, and to the north by Milton. It is 26 miles (42 km) north of downtown Atlanta. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) and is part of USDA hardiness zone 7b. The town has a population of 2,816. The city is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which runs through Alpharetta. It was built in the early 1900s as part of the Atlanta-Fulton County railroads. The turnpike was built to connect the city to the rest of the state of Georgia, which was at the time a hub for the rail network. The Turnpikes are now a main route between Atlanta and Savannah. It also serves as a gateway to the city of Atlanta and other parts of Fulton County, including parts of Gwinnett County and Forsyth County. In the summer, the town is known for its hot, dry summers and cool, dry winters. The area has a high school football team, the Atlanta Falcons, which has won several state championships and one national championship. The team is coached by former Atlanta Falcons player and current Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who is also a member of the Georgia Tech football coaching staff. The football team has won two state championships, the first in 2000 and the second in 2010. The Falcons have won one state championship in the last five years.

Demographics

There were 13,911 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% were non-families. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.13. During the workday, the city swells to more than 120,000 residents, workers, and visitors, due to the more than 3,600 businesses that are located in the city. There were 14,670 housing units at an average density of 686.7 per square mile (265.1/km²). The population has been gradually increasing over the last decade. Economy

Alpharetta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. The city's top private sector employers are: Cynergy Data, NetBank, Avalon, and North Point Mall. Tech Alpharetta was established by the city in 2012. The organization is an independent, 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization that aims to help the city lead in technology innovation. It runs an advisory board of technology companies based in the city, holds monthly technology events for technology executives, and operates a technology startup incubator. As of early 2020, about ten companies have "graduated" from the organization's incubator and were hiring employees in the North Fulton County region. It is located on the Georgia-Florida state line, near the state line with Georgia and Georgia-Tennessee. It has a population of about 2,000. The population of Fulton County is about 1,800. The county has an average household income of about $50,000 (or about $60,000 for a family of four). The city has an unemployment rate of about 4.7%. The city is home to the Georgia Tech Entrepreneur Institute, which was founded in 2007. The university has an enrollment of about 3,000 students (or 1,200 for a bachelor's degree) and has a student population of around 1,500 (or 2,500 for a master's degree). It has an employment rate of around 8.2 percent (or 8.3 percent for a doctorate degree).

Government

Alpharetta is governed by a city council composed of six members and a mayor. The mayor and council members serve staggered four-year terms. The current mayor is Jim Gilvin, who is in his second term. The city is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The town's population is about 2,000. It is located near the junction of two rivers, the Susquhanna and the Ohio rivers. It has a population of about 1,500 people. It was founded in 1883. The U.S. state of Pennsylvania was founded on the Susie River in 1881. The state's first mayor was elected in 1882. The first city council was formed in 1894. In 1894, the city was incorporated as a city. It had a mayor and six members, serving staggered four year terms. It now has a mayor-council combination of six council members and the mayor. It also has a city manager and a city attorney. The council is made up of seven members, with the mayor and the city manager each serving a four year term. In 2010, the mayor was re-elected to a second term, and in 2012, the council elected a new mayor, James Gilvin. The new mayor is currently serving his third term, in which he is in charge of the city of 2,500 residents. He was elected to a fourth term in 2012. The next mayor is expected to be elected in 2014.

Transportation

The Big Creek Greenway is a concrete multi-use trail that runs from Windward Parkway to Mansell Road. The concrete trail is approximately 8 miles and meanders along Big Creek parallel to North Point Parkway. A soft mulch trail encircles a large wetland between Haynes Bridge Road and Mansell road. Future plans are to connect the trail to Cumming. The city is not directly served by MARTA trains, but is by multiple bus routes. Currently, there have only been plans to connect Alpharetta to the rest of Metro Atlanta via heavy rail. There are plans for the creation of the Alpha Loop. The multi- use path will serve to connect residents of Alphareta to activity centers, parks, and jobs by a network of trails. It will provide safe alternatives to driving and offering recreational benefit. There is no direct connection to Metro Atlanta by heavy rail, but there are plans to link the city to other parts of the city via bus routes and other modes of transportation. It is not currently known whether or not there will ever be a MARTA line to the city from Atlanta to Atlanta. The town is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which connects Atlanta to the South and the South East. It also connects to the Atlanta Metropolitan area via the Atlanta Beltline, which links Atlanta to Cobb County and the Atlanta suburb of Atlanta. It has a number of major highways, including State Route 9, State Route 120, and U.S. Route 19.

Attractions and events

The Alpharetta Farmers Market is a weekly farmers' market in the downtown area that opens every Saturday from 8 AM to 12:30 PM from April to October. The Walk of Memories is at American Legion Post 201 and pays tribute to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, community and friends, through a brick walk inscribed with the names of all Georgia residents killed in service during and after World War II. North Point Community Church is the main campus of North Point Ministries, the nation's largest church organization, run by evangelical preacher Andy Stanley. The Alpharezza Symphony Orchestra (AlphaSO) is an orchestra based in Alphareta. The Big Creek Greenway is a 6.1-mile-long (9.8 km), 12-foot-wide (3.7 m) concrete path that meanders through the woods along Big Creek, offering a place to walk, jog, inline skate and bike. The Scarecrow Harvest is held the first Saturday in October to celebrate its fall spirit. The Wire and Wood Alpharettas Songwriters Festival in downtown Alphareeta is held in October. It features food from local restaurants, live music, and art exhibits. A 12,000-capacity outdoor venue that serves as the summer home of the Grammy Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and hosta acts like the Dave Matthews Band, Rod Stewart, Steve Miller Band and the Eagles is located in the historic downtown area. The Town of Alpharettes is home to the Atlanta Sparks special needs hockey team. It is also home to a Men Rugby Team competing in the Georgia Rugby Union and USA Rugby competitions.

Education

The city is served by Fulton County Schools. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta operates Holy Redeemer Catholic School (K-8) in Johns Creek. Georgia State University, Gwinnett Technical College and Reinhardt University have campuses in Alpharetta. The Alpharett Symphony Youth Orchestra is based in the city. The city is home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System operates the Alphareta Branch. The City of Alpharezza is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the counties of Fulton, DeKalb, and Dekalb, as well as the city of Roswell. It is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which runs from Atlanta to Cobb County, and the Georgia-Wright Highway, which goes from Cobb to Cobb. It also has the Atlanta International Airport, which links Atlanta to the Georgia International Airport in Cobb County and the Atlanta-Worth International Airport to the Cobb County Airport in Decembe, Georgia. It has the Georgia State College of Arts and Sciences, which offers classes in the evenings and weekends. The University of Georgia operates the Atlanta College of Art and Design, which has classes from the evenings to the weekend. The Georgia Institute of Technology is located in the town's downtown area. It offers a number of programs, including the Georgia Tech College of Music, the Georgia College of Fine Arts, the College of Science and the Arts, and a college of Business and Technology, which also offers classes.

The UV Index has been defined by the WHO (www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/radiation-the-ultraviolet-(uv)-index) and is uniform worldwide.
