Stanton

Stanton is a city in northern Orange County, California, part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city was incorporated in 1956 and operates under the councilmanager form of government, providing a full range of municipal services. Stanton is directly bordered by Anaheim to the north and Cypress to the west. A southern salient of the city largely bisects the city of Garden Grove from its West Garden Grove neighborhood, making the city as a whole a neighbor of Stanton to the east, south, and west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.15 square miles (8.2 km²), all land. In 2010, the U.S. Census reported that Stanton had a population of 38,186, with the racial makeup of 16,991 (44.5%) White, 8,831 (23.1%) Asian, 217 (0.6%) Pacific Islander, 9,274 (24.3%) from other races, and 1,610 (4.2%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19,417 persons (50.8%) Non-Hispanic Whites were 21.8% of the population. In the early 1950s, the area had experienced a post-war population boom and the neighboring cities rapidly annexed land. The residents voted to dis-incorporate to avoid the cost of building roads in the city. In May 1956, the citizens responded by re-inc incorporating into today's City of Stanton.

History

Stanton was named for Philip A. Stanton, a Republican assemblyman for Los Angeles from 1903 to 1909. In 1924, the residents voted to dis-incorporate to avoid the cost of building roads in the city. The 1928 map shows how the line was laid out by the Pacific Electric Railway, which leased the line from the L.A. Interurban Railway in 1908. It was the first light-rail line in the U.S.

Stanton has a population of 3,816. It has a climate of predominantly dry, hot, and dry summers and cool, dry winters. It also has a dry, dry, and wet winters and summers, and a wet, wet, and humid summers and winters, with an average monthly temperature of °C (°F) to °F (°C). The city has an average annual rainfall of 1,814.5 square miles (3,822.5 km²) and an average yearly temperature of  3,715 square miles (4,722.7 km²). It is one of the few cities in California to have a population over 100,000, and is home to the National Census Bureau and National Agricultural Exchange Commission.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Stanton had a population of 38,186. The racial makeup of Stanton was 16,991 (44.5%) White, 8,831 (23.1%) Asian, 217 (0.6%) Pacific Islander, 9,274 (24.3%) from other races, and 1,610 (4.2%) from two or more races. Non-Hispanic Whites were 21.8% of the population. There were 11,283 housing units at an average density of 3,582.0 per square mile (1,383.0/km²), of which 5,418 were owner-occupied, and 5,407 (49.9%) were occupied by renters. The median household income in 2010 was $50,542, with 16.9% of residents living below the federal poverty line. In 2000, there were 37,403 people, 10,767 households and 7,806 families residing in the city. The average household size was 3.50, with the average family size of 3.90. In 2010, the city had a median age of 33.0 years, with 10,566 people (27.7%) under the age of 18, 4,062 people (10.6) aged 18 to 24, 11,289 people (29.6%), 8,455 people (22.1%), and 3,814 people (10.0%) who were 65 years of age or older.

Economy

According to the city's 2021 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the city are: The city's top employers are: construction, manufacturing, and finance. The city is home to more than 1,000 businesses, according to the report. The top employers include: the city council, the mayor's office, the police department, the fire department, and the city hall. The economy is the second-largest employer, followed by the hospital system and the state's fire and police departments, the report says. The largest employer is the city government, which employs more than 2,000 people, the city says. It is also home to the state legislature, the library, the hospital, the state government and the county government. It also has a number of businesses that employ about 1,200 people, including the state and county government, police, fire and the fire departments. It has a population of more than 3,000. It's the largest city in the state in terms of employment, with more than 100,000 residents. It was the largest employer in the country in 2010 and 2011, and is expected to be the largest in 2021. The U.S. city in 2021 will be the biggest employer in 20 years. It will also be the most populous city in 2023, the 2021 Comprehensive annual financial report says, with over 1,100 employees. The most jobs will be created in the next five years. The number of jobs will grow to 2,500 by the year's end.

Attractions

Stanton Central Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the U.S. It is located in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city is also home to the world's largest rodeo, the Rodeo 39, and the Central Park Farmers' Market.

Parks and recreation

Stanton has 10 parks including Beach & Orangewood Pocket Park, Harry Dotson Park, Hollenbeck Park, Martha Weishaup Linear Park, Norm Ross Sports Complex, Premier Park, Stanton Park and Veterans Memorial Park. 74% of residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park. Two parks are under construction with a dog park located at Cerritos & Western and a parkette at OrangEWood & Santa Rosalia. The Stanton Family Resource Center (FRC) is dedicated to assisting families to help reach their full potential. This family-oriented center offers both programs for children and adults. In the 1950s, with help of the James Irvine Foundation, the Stanton Lions Club and a land donation from a local farmer, Lions-Stock Park was built with a sports facility and community center. This privately owned park was later purchased by the school board. This community guide is published by the Stanton Community Services Department. Government and politics

The mayor of Stanton is David J. Shawver; the city manager is Hannah Shin-Heydorn. Stanton is in the California State Legislature, represented by Democrat Josh Newman. In the U.S. House of Representatives, it is in California's 47th congressional district. The city is located in the Central Coast region of California. It is located near the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Joaquin Valley. It has a population of about 2,000 people, according to the city's 2010 census. The mayor is David Shawver, who was elected in 2010. He is the first openly gay mayor of a city in the state of California, and the second openly bisexual mayor of the state. He was elected to office in 2010, and was re-elected in 2012. The current mayor is Hannah Shin- heydorn, who has been in office since 2013. She was elected as the first female mayor in the city in 2012, and is the second woman to serve as mayor. She has served as mayor since 2008, when she was elected for a second term. The last time she was mayor was in 2005, when the city was in its third year of existence. It was the first time the city had been in its current location for more than a decade. It also is the only city in California to have a mayor who is also a former mayor. The town has a mayor and a city manager who have been married for at least a decade, and has been married twice.

Education

Residents of Stanton are served by four public school districts and one private school. The Orange County Public Library has a branch Library in Stanton. The Stanton Boys and Girls Club, located next door, offers computer access, tutoring and a homework help room for elementary school children. The Future Scientists and Engineers of America offers hands-on projects that encourage middle and high school aged children to learn about mathematics, science and engineering. Orange County Children's Theater produces plays and musicals. Often Broadway style musicals are held in the city's Community Center with a professional sound system, lighting and staging. The Magnolia School District's Baden-Powell and Pyles Schools have been named as a Title I Academic Achievement School. The Garden Grove Unified School District operates a special education school in Stanton, named Carver (ECEC). The Savanna School District serves elementary school students and has a high API similar school ranking of 9.75 out of 10 as compiled by the California Department of Education. Saint Polycarp School (K-8) Catholic School is located in Stanton and is a private school for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The city is home to the Orange County High School, which is a magnet school for students with a high school diploma or GED. It is also the home of the Anaheim Union High School District, a private high school for high school students with an GED degree. It has a library with over 60,000 volumes and free high speed wireless Internet access (WiFi).

Infrastructure

Stanton is located north of the Garden Grove (22) Freeway, south of the Artesia (91) Freeways, east of the San Gabriel River (605)Freeway and west of the Santa Ana (5) Freway. Fire protection in Stanton is provided by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) with ambulance transport by Care Ambulance Service. The Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) provides law enforcement services under the command of Police Chief Cruz Alday. In 1987 the city disbanded its police and fire departments and contracted with county agencies. In 2021, Safewise included Stanton in their seventh annual "Californias 50 Safest Cities" report. The city is home to the American Legion Post 783 and the Greater Anaheim Chamber of Commerce. It also has a Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Boys and Girls Club, and several other community service organizations. It is located in Orange County's Central Coast region, near the cities of Anaheim and Santa Ana, and the towns of Garden Grove and Costa Mesa. It was named one of the top 50 cities in the U.S. in the 2011 "Los Angeles Times" list of the world's most livable cities. It has a population of 2,816,000 (as of July 1, 2013) and a population growth rate of 2.7% (2013-2014) of 1.9% (2011-2014). The city's population was 2,715,000 as of July 2014.
